Bios:
Nao Yamada - Brazilian Samba/Reggae - From Chiba, Japan. Nao
began Ballet training at the age of 10 with the ambition of becoming
a well-rounded dancer. She moved to NYC in 2000 and attended the Alvin
Ailey school. As an international performer, Nao has worked with numerous
television, film, and magazine productions. She is currently working
with a variety of dance companies including Michael Mao Dance(Modern),
Kotchegna Dance(West African), Grupo Ribeiro(Brazilian), JC caribbean
entertainment(Caribbean) and Fusha Dance(Congolese).
Funmilayo - Congolese Dance - Funmilayo was born in
Brazil and grew up in Guyana. Funmilayo traveled extensively to Nigeria
and Ghana, where she lived and studied dance for three years. She also
visited the Congo - the motherland of her ancestors.
In 1987 to 1992 she was a member of the only traditional Congolese Dance
company in New York City , Malaki MA Congo and won the Ethnic Dance
Award for best Africa dance Instructor in 1996. Funmilayo has been teaching
Congolese Dance for close to 20 years in New York City and is the director
of F.U.S.H.A. Dance Company founded in 1995.
Funmilayo has also studied Ballet,Modern, Tap, Sabar , Guinean, Haitian,
Afro-Cuban , Afro-Brazilian, Dahome , and Dunham . She works for the
Department of Education where she teaches pre kindergarten to 12th grade.
The ancient dances of the Congolese, combined with the genius creations
of their descendants have shaped musical culture of many music and dance
styles in the diaspora: Samba, Salsa, Hip Hop, Reggae, Calypso, Cassav,
Jazz, Hawaiian, Belly Dance, the Electric Slide, and even Michael Jackson's
"Moonwalk", just to name a few. Congolese Dance is a healing
Dance for men and women, for the womb and the
prostate - pelvic rotations create healing vibrations
Fayzah - Tribal-Fusion Bellydance - Fayzah's personal
style is unique. Her dance is characterized by a powerful fluidity and
musicality, precise technique and muscle control, smooth waves and crisp
pops, hits, & isolations.
In addition to her weekly Tribal Fusion classes and workshops on Tribal
Fusion technique and fluidity, Fayzah has led her NYC troupe, the Aurea
Dancers, in performances at dance concerts and special events. The Aurea
Dancers are featured in the “Tarot Bellydance” DVD, on the
World Dance NY label.
Fayzah’s choreographic works have a wide range of theatrical elements,
characters, & remarkable costuming. She expresses stories through
her dancing, and also taps into her own purity of expression.
In addition to Tribal Fusion Bellydance, Fayzah has extensive experience
performing Folkloric and Cabaret bellydance & Electric Tribal-Fusion,
as well as her own innovation of Tango/Bellydance Fusion. Fayzah is
a lover of finger cymbals, and enjoys using them in her performances.
Her experience as a DJ also lends to her musicality. Her travels in
Egypt have given Fayzah an added creative perspective, and enhanced
her cultural understanding and commitment.She
has taught trance dance retreats, and is interested in dance as a healing
method, through sound vibration, Meditation, and the effect movements
have on a physiological, psychological, & spiritual level.
Along with her thriving solo performance career, Fayzah has contributed
to productions by NYC creative collectives such as Bellyqueen, the Neville
Dance Theater and Venus Uprising. Her solo work is featured in the "Fantasy
Bellydance" DVD, “Tarot Bellydance” DVD (World Dance
New York), “Bellyqueen: The Bellydance Experience” DVD (Hollywood
Music Center), & The “Memento Muerto” DVDs (NDT).
